Cylinder Liners can be easily replaced when it wears out.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nAnd due to Pistons&#8217; critical movement during its functioning, Cylinder Liners must be Wear-resistant &amp; Corrosion-resistant. Which means a Cylinder Liner should be of high strength.&nbsp;\n<h3>Material Used in Cylinder Liners:<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nSince a Cylinder Liner should be of high strength, Cylinder Liners are generally made up of grey cast iron material.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3>How is a Cylinder Liner manufactured?<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\n<a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atracparts.com\/cylinder-liners.php\">Cylinder Liners<\/a> are usually manufactured using a centrifugal casting process.&nbsp;\n\nGrey cast iron is heated in the induction furnace and the molten metal is taken to the centrifugal casting machinery.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nA permanent mold is rotated continuously about its axis at high speeds as the molten metal is poured causing the metal to distribute itself evenly around the die.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nSince the impurities are lighter than iron, they\u2019re forced to the bore surface, due to centrifugal force and later they\u2019re removed by machining.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nThe resulting casting is of much finer grain and free from blow holes and porosity than a usual casting process.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nCorrosion resistance is further improved by adding chromium.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nNow let&#8217;s get to the main purpose of this article i.e. to explain the different types of Cylinder Liner.&nbsp;\n<h2>Types of Cylinder Liner:<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nCylinder Liners are categorized in predominantly 3 types depending upon its method of Cooling.&nbsp;\n<h3>Dry Type Cylinder Liner:<\/h3>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.atracparts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"450\"><\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:html -->\n<figure><\/figure>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<figure>Dry Type Cylinder Liner is the most common type of cylinder liner. It works under high pressure and temperature and hence has to be made up of cast iron and ceramic-nickel plating which are high-grade materials.<\/figure>\n<!-- \/wp:html -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nDry Liners material Composition mostly includes Cast Iron and Ceramic-Nickel Compounds which gives it several features which are not achievable in Wet Liners\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nA cylinder block with Dry Liners is more robust than its counterpart, wet liner liners.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nDry liners are relatively thinner than Wet liners.\n\nDry liner is not in direct contact with the coolant but protects Piston from wear and impurities.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nDry liner fits directly against the wall of the cooling jacket in the cylinder block.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\n<strong><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>\n\n<strong><em>Advantage <\/em><\/strong>of Dry Cylinder Liner is that its replacement is easy and it has no exposure to water jacket difficulty. Dry Liners can be used in almost all kinds of Engines.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\n<strong><em>Disadvantage <\/em><\/strong>of Dry Cylinder Liner is that the Cylinder block in which it is fitted is difficult to manufacture and heat dissipation is not quite efficient.&nbsp;\n<h3>Wet Type Cylinder Liner:<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:html -->\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.atracparts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/02.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"450\"><\/figure>\nWet type Cylinders are made up of the same material as of Dry Type Cylinder Liner.\n\n<!-- \/wp:html -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nWet Liners interact with Engine coolant directly to protect the Piston.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nWet Liners have better heat dissipation and cooling than Dry-type Cylinder Liner.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nWet Liners may have a cooling water space between the engine block and liner, or they may have integral cooling&nbsp;\n\npassages.\n\nAnd in Wet liners which do not have integral cooling passages, the water jacket is formed by the liner and a separate jacket which is a part of the block.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nA static seal must be provided at both the combustion and crankshaft ends of the cylinders to prevent the leakage of coolant into the oil pan sump, or combustion space.\n\nGenerally, the seal at the combustion end of a liner consists of either a gasket under a flange or a machined fit.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nThe wall of the Cylinder Liner must to strong enough to withstand the combustion pressure.<strong><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>\n\n<strong><em>Advantage <\/em><\/strong>of Wet type Liner is that it is comparatively easy to manufacture, Cooling is more effective and longitudinal stress is relieved due to thermal expansion of liner.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\n<strong><em>Disadvantage <\/em><\/strong>of Wet type Liners is that its replacement is difficult and there is a risk of water leakage problems.&nbsp;\n<h3>Air-Cooled or Finned Cylinder Liner:<\/h3>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.atracparts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/03.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"450\">\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:html -->\n<figure><\/figure>\n<!-- \/wp:html -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nAir Cooled Cylinder Liners are made from special \u201cShell Moulding Process\u201d having wear-resisting, close-grained, iron casting to ensure long life and efficient cooling.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nAs the name suggests, Air Cooled Liners are specifically designed for Air-Cooled Engines. Air Cooled Liners are most commonly used in Automobiles.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nIt\u2019s working is the same as Dry Cylinder Liner but the cooling Medium in this scenario is air.\n\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n\nHeat dissipation of Air Cooled Liner is carried through the mode of Forced convection with the help of its fins which is applied on its surface.
